Mattia Sinigaglia's work is a meeting point between painting and sculpture, creating a dialogue between the essentiality of figuration, poised between abstract synthesis and informal realism, and meticulous research and experimentation with materials. The composition is based on the interweaving of different elements – in this case, canvas, cedar wood and glazed ceramics – which interact as active, mobile, dynamic agents, forming the structural basis (and stylistic signature) of his “sculptural paintings”. In Versus, the resulting hybrid language outlines a desert landscape inhabited by animal and anthropomorphic forms resembling artefacts: on one side, a bird suspended between the sun and the horizon; on the other, a stylised face, almost camouflaged, in the shadowed part of the dune. The discontinuity between the two- and three-dimensional planes is balanced by the chromatic equilibrium: while the gap between image and object generates a subtle, persistent tension, the palette creates harmony, revealing the very essence of the creative process. It is no coincidence that the artist describes her work as “a kind of dance between materials”, which, before being modelled, are “listened to” at length, then left free to tell their story: human, animal, natural, in perpetual transformation.
